Dubai metro launches navigation system for people with vision problems

Dubai authorities launch smart metro navigation technology for people with special needs.

An experimental technology has been launched in Dubai that helps blind people move in the subway.

The Dubai Highway and Transportation Authority (RTA) has launched a demo for the iPhone at Rashidiya Metro Station.

The statement said that the system converts written information into speech, including graphs and direction indicators for exits, stairs, escalators.

This technology is the first of its kind for the region. It can be expanded to all metro stations in case of successful tests.

"RTA teamed up with a specialized technology company to launch this technology at the Rashidiya metro station during the test period. Then RTA will examine and analyze the results," said Abdul Mohsen Ibrahim Younes, CEO of RTA Rail Agency.

This move is also consistent with the initiative of Sheikh Hamdan bin Muhammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, to turn Dubai into the friendliest city for people with special needs by 2020.
