Dozens of Crosswalks in Dubai Become Smart

Dubai authorities increase the number of “smart” pedestrian crossings in the emirate.

Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is expanding the reach of the Dubai Smart Pedestrian Signals project. After successful trials on Al Saadah Street in 15 new places will appear "smart" pedestrian traffic lights.

The project is in line with RTA’s efforts to realize the goals of the Smart City initiative, the statement said. This technology is advanced for the region.

Maita Bin Adai, Director General of the Traffic Agency at RTA, said that smart pedestrian traffic lights were installed in several crowded areas of Dubai, including Al Muraqqabat, Al Rigga, Al Mankhoul, Baniyas, 2nd of December Street, Al Maktoum and Sheikh Khalifa Streets.

“They were also represented in Al Barsha and City Walk districts. This initiative is part of the RTA’s plans to support the Dubai Government’s Smart City initiative,” she said.

Smart Pedestrian Signals technology is controlled by a system based on sensors connected to a ground-based optical system, synchronized with traffic signal switching. This system allows pedestrians to safely cross the road without interfering with the movement of vehicles.

“The system should increase the safety of pedestrians who need more time to crosswalk than usual: older people, people with special needs and people with luggage or strollers. It will also facilitate traffic, as the pedestrian mode will not turn on if no pedestrians were found on the sidewalk, ”added Mayta bin Adai.
