Abu Dhabi Records Over 50 Housing Law Violations

The Abu Dhabi city government has recorded 51 offenses committed by private companies and land owners.

On Sunday, the Abu Dhabi city administration announced that 51 irregularities committed by private firms and land owners in the Mussaf area were recorded in the city. All offenders will be fined between 10 and 100 thousand dirhams.

Violators were identified during a full-scale campaign aimed at identifying illegal construction in the Mussaf region and surrounding areas.

This campaign was implemented in the framework of the legislation governing housing standards.

"This action is part of the measures taken by the Department of Housing Planning aimed at combating illegal settlement. A set of measures helps protect all residents of the country," said representatives of the city administration.

"In addition to the illegal rental of such housing units for non-residential purposes, such offenses lead to overpopulation, excessive use of natural resources. Thus, illegal activities of this kind trigger a whole chain of other offenses."

The campaign to identify violations of the law is aimed at improving the standards of health and environmental protection, it also protects the rights of workers, and forces construction companies to create favorable working conditions. Among other things, the activities of the municipality are aimed at raising awareness of residents about what risks such violations can lead to: a threat to the health of citizens and public order in general.

"Such violations stain the image of the city of Abu Dhabi and the entire metropolitan area. A number of measures by the Abu Dhabi administration are based on Law No. 1 of 2011, which regulates the housing standard in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The municipality takes certain steps to identify violations and inform about them of the population, conducts field inspections of residential buildings, notifies owners and law enforcement agencies about the negative consequences of overcrowding in the premises. Inspectors from the administration distribute special booklets and information ion newsletters with details of the current legislation in the area of rental apartment buildings.

In some cases, the municipality sends cases of violators to a court, where a decision is made on the amount of the fine in accordance with the conditions and circumstances of each of the cases of violation of the law.

According to the municipality, regular checks will continue. The administration will continue to verify the construction of temporary housing for workers in collaboration with authorities, including the Abu Dhabi police and others.

The Abu Dhabi Administration encourages all residents to abide by the rules for their own safety and health.
